...picking a horse

Image
An obvious photo of horses, to go with the tag line of this entry... Gelatin-Silver print, from the collection. Photographer Unknown. UPDATE (To Previous Post, Below): 12-24-2009: I have decided that this is not the horse for me... at first, it rode well and the coat was nice, but something was amiss. So, I sold it before I got thrown. Dr. Warner was a good doctor, but I think the path, for me, was all wrong. It took some time to figure this out on my own... and sometimes, you grasp for any straw, be it short or long.... you are just happy to have something in your hand. Former Post: I've just returned from New York City after my meeting with Dr. Warner at Mt. Sinai. This is the first time I’ve left a doctor’s office feeling like I have a real plan for treatment! My research to date and endless search for answers has finally paid off. Dr. Warner is recognized at the foremost authority on Carcinoid Cancer, and needless to say, he is extremely knowledgeable with over 40 years of st

hold the breath for an instant...

Image
Illustrations from: Nos. 1 & 1A Autographic Kodak Juniors Manual : Pages 24 & 25. "When making instantaneous exposures with any Kodak, hold it firmly against the body as shown in the illustrations, and when operating the cable release, or pushing down on the exposure lever, hold the breath for an instant." I love that... hold the breath, take it in, and release the shutter, as if everything just stops for a second, or really, a fraction there of. I found this manual at a local yard sale this weekend... yes, I took off from work for a few hours to scout with Andrea. It was well worth the find! I also picked up a few rolls of old educational short movies, photo journals, and a sweet red pine wood derby car made in 1965.

out there...

Kodachrome: Square: Circa 1970: From the Collection: Photographer Unknown How could I not want to swim? Jump off the dock and let the cool water wake me up... floating on my back watching the clouds drift by... ears going just below the water, so that the wind can no longer be heard, just the fins of fish, pushing water like so many mini hurricanes toward the single-celled universe.

the gas station

Image
Found Photo: Gelatin-Silver Print. From the Collection: Photographer Unknown. When I was in high school I worked at a local 24hr gas station. It was a place where the AM and PM crowds crossed paths on their way to and from ...wherever it was they were going? In four years, I think I learned more from the gas station than I did in high school? It was there that I developed my ferocious appetite for sugar, nicotine, and bottomless cups of worse-than-dinner-truck-stop coffee. It was there that I learned about people, right and wrong, truth and lies… I probably owe more to that gas station than I do to Moby Dick or George Eastman’s Kodak. Behind the register, or from behind the cooler doors, I did more than stock and punch. – I observed. However, no matter how much I watched others, it was as if I didn’t exist? People would barely look at me, or only stop to grumble more than their pump number. Was I invisible? I don’t know, but that was how it felt… The man who came in with his wife a

Pathology report back from Mt. Sinai in NYC

Image
Silver Gelatin Print: From the Collection: Photographer Unknown. My patho report is back... Much of the same markers were confrmed, but new stains were performed. OLD INFO: Still positive for AE1/ AE3, Synaptophysin, & CAM5.2. Negative for TTF-1, Chromogranin, and CD31, CD34. KI67 = 2.3%. Well to moderately differentiated, depending on the lab. NEW INFO: CDX2 is focally positive and MIB is less than 1% (Similar to KI67). No Mitoses or Necrosis (Typical Carcinoid). Serotonin is negative. Some info on CDX-2... which is supposed to be an important marker. TTF-1 being positive might indicate a tumor in the lung. (my TTF-1 is negative). Note that my tumor is "Focally Positive" for CDX2... "...Other potential uses of this marker include the workup of metastatic tumors at other sites. The marker may aid in the differential diagnosis of well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumors first detected in the liver. Extensive positive Cdx2 staining predicts a metastasis from a gastro

Short Order...?

Image
"Short Order...?" Silver Gelatin Print: From the Collection: Photographer Unknown. What can I say? I'm absolutely drained...! It's been a while since I've felt like this, but I'm burnt out! I've been working like a crazy man over the last few weeks... with the last weekend being the most brutal. On Saturday, I did a 21hr day, on my feet the whole time, which was proceeded by back to back 18hr work days, followed by very little sleep... I'm shocked that I'm still functioning in any capacity. Then again, I've always had a lot of energy. I've always been very good at accomplishing a lot, despite the physical and emotional drain. So, I'm still plugging away, but I really do need a break! Actually, what I need more help. I have a good crew of people who work with me, and Andrea is the best, but I need a full time assistant and/or clone? The main problem is finding the time to effectively manage everyone. It's not that easy! But hey, this

shot #5

Image
How could I not post my favorite treatment! The good old Sanostatin LAR, 30MG, Shot #5, which means I'm 5 months into my lifetime of treatment... which also means ($12,500) x (4) 30MG shots, + (1) 20MG shot at $7,500 = a running total $57,500. Put that into perspective for a minute. Many families don't even make that as a combined yearly salary! I think my tests and treatment to date are close to the $300K mark (Over just 7 months)? If I increase the dosage to 60MG, as suggested by Warner and Woltering, that would be $300,000 annually in shots alone? How are people (Americans) expected to survice without insurance? This frustrates me to no end! Say what you want about Obama, or the Dems, or the GOP... I don't care who your party is! Just fix this shit becuase price tags like this are cruel. I've said it before, but healthcare should be a right for all... even if that means we pay more taxes, or even have to stand in line for it. People are suffering, dieing, because the

No Dice...?

I'm still waiting on the final report from today's procedure, but the doctor sperforming the X-Ray exam said they didn't see any significant tumors... shit! But, they still had to look at the images in more detail. So, we'll see? More to follow!

Test in progress... Very cool!

Image
This is a very cool test! It's still in progress because the barium needs to move through the stomach / bowel! I go in every 15 minutes for imaging. This image is a screen shot of my guts. The doctor physically manipulates my stomach and takes photos of what he sees on the screen. Through physical movement, he can push around the small bowel to get a better view of hard to see areas. Also, I get to watch the process... Very cool indeed. Hopefully we'll see something by the time this is complete?

Barium...yum!
